Algae Biofuel Summit 2008

August 20, 2008

Similar to plants, algae converts solar energy, CO2 & water to valuable chemical energy via photosynthesis. This chemical energy is stored in algae as lipid oils and can be converted into biodiesel. The residual algae de-oiled cake is a high protein matter and can be used as animal/ cattle feed, organic fertilizer and nutritional supplements.

Algae Farming Technologies could allow companies to capture and recycle emitted CO2 from flue gases and even earn a profit from being “green”. Companies, having issues with environmental control, can surely benefit from such technologies. The beautiful part of this technology is that industrial facilities do not need large internal modifications to host an algae farm.

These promising technologies shall be showcased by Growdiesel at “Algae Biofuel Summit 2008” from 17th to 19th Sept 2008 at New Delhi, India.

Earthrace

July 24, 2008

A new world record is set by Earthrace with their power boat circumnavigating the globe. It is powered by bio diesel fuel. There are many eco-freindly elements to earthrace like:

  • Earthrace runs on sustainably produced B100 biodiesel
  • Parts of Earthrace are made from hemp composite, a world first for boats
  • The antifoul is a new non-toxic type (most are heavy metal or iso-cyanate  based)
  • Lubricants are made from vegetable oils
  • Bedding foams are made from canola oil
  • Bilge water is pumped through special filters to remove any oil or hydrocarbon
  • Recycled ice cream containers were used during construction
  • MDF board used during construction were reused by local schools
  • The crew eat organic foods and local foods wherever possible
  • The entire project is run as carbon neutral, by calculating CO2 emissions and purchasing carbon credits to balance this
  • Crew waste is generally recycled
  • crew clothes are mostly made from hemp and bamboo.

Waste treatment at Jaipur

July 24, 2008
The Jaipur Municipal Corporation is all set to become the first municipality in the country to use ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis technology to treat sewage water and make it available for industrial uses. The corporation is working on five sewage treatment plants in association with RUIDP and JDA. In fact, all the plants will be using environment-friendly technology and they will get carbon credit remittance to the tune of over Rs 35 lakh per annum. The treatment plants will remove various contaminants present in sewage. The effluent and stabilised sludge thus produced can be gainfully utilised for industrial and agricultural uses. As per the estimates of PHED, the total supply of water in the city is pegged at 350 million litres per day (MLD) and more than 80% of this quantity is converted in to sewage water after various uses. Now it has been contemplated by civic agencies to tap these waste water and treat them under the reuse and recycle mechanism in various STPs. The JMC in its Unit II STP, which is under construction at Delawas, has added the components of biogas-fed power plant and a fertilizer plant. Unit I, which is already operational, is an Asian Development Bank-funded venture in association with RUIDP. It has the biogas plant attached to it, but in the absence of power generation unit, presently the gases are burnt and wasted. The Unit 1 of Delawas has the capacity to handle 62.5 mld. It has a secondary treatment plant which produces irrigation water which is drained in to Ramchandrapura dam for the benefit of farmers of the catchment area.
